With each presser, Favre looks more tired and drawn. His almost full head of gray hair and beard looks as though it should be a part of a Just For Men’s hair commercial. Losing most certainly doesn’t help his cause either. The Vikings are 0-2 after losing this past Sunday to the Miami Dolphins and suddenly looking up at the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears in the divisional standings.

Many people are fed up with Favre and his antics, sick of hearing the same runaround. However, those who are not athletes or haven’t played some kind of sport can’t relate. It’s the passion, the love of the game that makes it so hard for one to walk away from it completely. Think about it, Favre is entering his 20th NFL season, played his college ball at the University of Southern Mississippi and Hancock North Central High School in Kiln, Miss. Football is the only thing he knows.

A Green Bay Packers fan through and through, I have always been a huge fan of the quarterback. However, by no means am I an advocate for his indecisiveness. I would be lying if I said I was fine with the way he has carried on in certain situations.

Life after playing four years of collegiate lacrosse was, to say the least, very different. My teammates and I invested countless hours to the sport through individuals, practices, film and games. When it all ended, it was like going from 180 mph to a steady 25 mph in a school zone. Unlike college football, where there is an attainable goal of making it to the league, in women’s lacrosse there is no such thing. In those cases, the lacrosse void is satisfied with coaching opportunities.

What does Favre have to look forward to when that time finally arrives? A long life of Wrangler jeans, armadillo hunting and his diesel truck. Not to mention, he is a grandfather.

If there was any time for Favre to be selfish it should have been when his teammates, Jared Allen, Steve Hutchinson and Ryan Longwell showed up at his door pleading the legendary quarterback to come back for one last season. Super Bowl or bust was the motto. Favre stated that he didn’t come back for himself, but for the guys. He is no quitter. However, his body may have something else in store for him as the grueling season goes on. The schedule doesn’t get any easier either. This Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions can’t even be counted as a guaranteed win. Although Detroit is 0-2, the Lions are making positive steps in the right direction with its young players.

When the time ultimately comes for the gunslinger, he shouldn’t think twice about life after football. Favre has accomplished everything in his illustrious career that there is nothing else for him to prove. He has achieved things that other quarterbacks dream about.

Go ahead No. 4, it’s OK, ride into the sunset.
